One of the World’s Most Recognised Innovations Wasn’t a New Product, It was a Better Question
In 1975, a McDonald’s store operator noticed that soldiers wanted a meal, but military rules meant they couldn’t get out of their cars to get one. Instead of expecting the soldiers to navigate the problem, the restaurant asked: How do we change the system around the person? They cut a hole in the wall. The McDonald’s drive-through was born.
Where is the Drive-Through for Women Experiencing Complicated Domestic Violence?
When I learned how the drive-through came to be, I instantly thought: Where is the drive-through for women experiencing complicated domestic violence? What wall do we need to break through to make it easier for them to get what they need? We ask traumatised women to navigate police, courts, lawyers, housing and DV services while remembering years of abuse clearly enough to explain it, evidence it and repeat it.
It dawned on me that perhaps we’re asking the wrong question.
The answer isn’t to make traumatised women better at navigating complicated systems that, at times, seem to speak entirely different languages. It’s to build a better pathway around the woman so she can reach what she needs.
In McDonald’s case, it was easier access to a burger. For a woman escaping domestic violence, it should be easier access to safety. If we can redesign a system to make it easier to get a burger, surely we can redesign one when a woman’s life may depend on it.

My grandfather did that during the war. I am doing that for women escaping DV.
The principle he left me is remarkably simple:
When the bigger system can take someone no further, you must find a way to get them through.
That’s what I strive to do with RE Group: get women through the battlefield.
